Many artists try to perform the dark art of mastering on their own music but without serious experience will not be able to achieve the best results. You only get one chance to impress your listeners. Your music needs to be perfect.
With over 20 years experience as one of the UK's top DJ's, A+R for some of the worlds top labels, producer under countless aliases and endorsed by equipment giant Allen and Heath, Mark's made it his business to know how to master audio for the dancefloor.
If you've spent days, if not weeks on a piece of music, you simply cannot afford not to master it properly. Without correct mastering, your creation will not be heard the way you need it to be. Mastering is a serious science!
Typical Mistakes
- Dullness
- Too much top-end (hurting the ears)
- Booming bass (sounds awful on club speakers)
- Your track lacks power when played next to others
- Over Compression
- Distortion
- Stereo field is wrong
Without the correct knowledge or experience, you have no chance in sorting these issues out.
They say dont master your own music for good reason. Unless you know what you're doing, picking the correct Mastering Engineer is imperative.
Yet there are serious principles involved here. But you cannot polish a turd. If there are issues, Mark will let you know this, with complete honestly, before it's mastered - and give you the ammunition to correct it first. Then he will write session notes to allow you to improve.
- Send Mark your original track with NO COMPRESSION OR LIMITING
- Ensure the Peak on the Master Channel is no more than -4db.
- If there are any major issues, Mark will contact you BEFORE mastering.
